Klare Töne und ungewöhnliche musikalische Muster: Neue aufregende Vibrafon-Sounds kamen von der Platte „This Is Walt Dickerson!“ Mit seinem Debütalbum stellte sich der aus Philadelphia stammende Musiker im Jahr 1961 als Alternative zu dem damals extrem populären Milt Jackson vor.

Anstelle von dessen vom Bop inspirierter Spielweise brillierte Dickerson mit coolen Beiträgen, die auch in freie musikalische Bereiche vordrangen. Damit konnte er für einige Aufnahmen sogar den Pianisten Sun Ra als Sideman gewinnen, der sich ansonsten nur in den seltensten Fällen von seinem Arkestra trennte.
