Kris Davis „Diatom Ribbons“ 19.1.2020 Live At Bimhuis

‘The best music – within the jazz world and beyond it – can contain a multitude of ideas and sounds, reference endless genres and tell listeners something about the moment that it was recorded, as well as the past. Diatom Ribbons – and actually a lot about pianist Kris Davis in general – does precisely that’ (Downbeat).

Diatom Ribbons came into being during the recording of the eponymous album by Kris Davis, which she created with numerous well-known musicians from New York. Something remarkable happened during the session with DJ Val Jeanty and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, where three different worlds collided: free improvisation on piano, sound art on turntables and strong beats by a Grammy-winning drummer. For this project, Davis was inspired by forms of nature, in particular those of algy (diatoms), but also by musical innovators such as Cecil Taylor, John Cage and Olivier Messiaen.
