Europe Jazz Media Chart, October 2017

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice. This month’s chart marks the 5th birthday of the initiative, as the inaugural chart was published in October, 2012; this is the 61st EJM Chart!

Cim MeyerJazz Special (Denmark):

Rawfishboys «Fengling» (W.E.R.F. 145)

Cim Meyer comments:
Two bright stars, Joachim Badenhorst and Brice Soniano, of creative music in Europe. A French-Belgian collaboration building on years of experience as a duo playing rather demanding acoustic instruments. The music requires your undivided attention, then you will be rewarded with clear compositional ideas, marvelous instrumental execution on double bass and clarinets, and a multitude of sonic excesses. Soothing music from kind people – though the last piece, Broen, is a reminder of the final we are heading for.

Lars MossefinnDag & Tid (Norway):

Paweł BrodowskiJazz Forum (Poland):

Sławek Jaskułke «Tokyo Solo Concert 2016» (Sea Label, Pl/CorePort, Jp)

Paweł Brodowski comments:
A solo outing by one of Poland’s outstanding jazz pianists, recorded live in Japan last December, brings fresh interpretations of some of his earlier compositions presented on such studio albums as „Moments,” “Sea,” and “Senne,” with a special bonus loosely based on Krzysztof Komeda’s famous „Grey Carol.” Intimacy, introspection, subtle colors, and superb sound quality.

Mike Flynn Jazzwise (U.K.):

Anna FilipievaJazz.Ru (Russia):

Peter Ivshin «The Path of the Hermit. Vol. 1. Triptych» (ArtBeat Music)

Anna Filipieva comments:
This deep work by Muscovite drummer, Peter Ivshin, is offering a new vision of the ensemble role of the drums: instead of traditional concept, the listener is proposed to perceive percussion as a powerful generator of complex emotions.
