With his band Sound Effect, Ben Williams swings, funk and rocks through his original music, which he prefers to call ‘soul’, but which actually doesn’t fit any box whatsoever. The bassist from New York is part of a new generation of jazz musicians that writes its own rules.

On his albums he can link African grooves to a Marvin Gaye feel, or cinematic harmonies to slamming go-go beats. He plays both double bass and electric bass guitar.

Ben Williams made his breakthrough after winning the Thelonious Monk Award and he was recognized as a Rising Star in the Downbeat Critics Polls. He played a star role on the Grammy-winning eponymous album of the Pat Metheny Unity Band featuring Antonio Sánchez and Chris Potter. He has played with jazz heroes such as Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, as well as with pop stars such as Chaka Khan and Pharrell Williams.
