BBC Radio 3 Freeness: Middle Eastern Poetry
Interweaving words and harmonies come together in a poetic exploration of womanhood, as Corey Mwamba presents an exclusive piece from London-based vocalist and composer Alya Al-Sultani.
Putting the words of Iraqi feminist poet Nazik Al-Malaika to music, Al-Sultani draws on her formative experiences of immigration and Iraqi folk songs to create a multi-layered vocal soundscape.
Elsewhere in the show, a lo-fi groove from Steve Beresford, newly re-released after a very limited original run in 2003, and electroacoustic improvisation from Lynn Cassiers and Alexandra Grimal.
