Oleś Brothers & Christopher Dell «Górecki Ahead» (Audio Cave ACD-005)

Paweł Brodowski comments:
This is the trio’s follow up to their previous collaboration „Komeda Ahead”. An inspired re-interpetation of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, one of the greatest Polish composers of contemporary music. Bassist Marcin Oleś and drummer Bartłomiej Oleś are always ready for experiment, as is their German guest, vibraphonist Christopher Dell. They have worked together successfully for seven years now.

Anna FilipievaJazz.Ru (Russia):

Sasha Mashin «Outsidethebox» (Rainy Days Records)

Anna Filipieva comments:
By 41, drummer Sasha Mashin was one of the most internationally exposed Russian jazz instrumentalists. Then he made a tattoo of a wide open box on his arm, decided that he wanted something more than a busy sideman’s life, and came “outside the box” by starting his solo career with this bold statement of an album. It has enough fiery drumming on it, but also a lot of fine modern ensemble playing with the likes of Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, Zhenya Strigalev and Rosario Giuliani on alto sax, plus sixteen other worthy musicians.

Jan GranlieSalt Peanuts (Norway-Denmark):

Anthony Braxton «Sextet (Parker) 1993» (New Braxton House Records)

Jan Granlie comments:
In March, the Tri-Centric Foundation and New Braxton House Records released Braxton’s «Sextet (Parker) 1993» – a violent 11-CDer box with thorough documentation of Braxton’s now legendary European tour that made music composed by and associated with Charlie Parker. One of the most original composers and conceptualists in the jazz in the last fifty years, Anthony Braxton followed his own musical landscape throughout his career – from the 1974 recording “What’s New in the Tradition” to his seven album of tribute to Lennie Tristano, «Quintet (Tristano) 2014». This Charlie Parker project is a centrepiece of the “journey”, a collection of music that recognizes, extends and renews the bebop tradition, where he also re-radicalizes Parker’s musical revolution with a brilliant band that is well versed in the jazz tradition and with very creative music performance: Dutch piano player Misha Mengelberg, trumpeter Paul Smoker, tenor saxophonist Ari Brown from Chicago, bassist Joe Fonda, and drummer Pheeroan akLaff (another Dutch jazz innovator, drummer Han Bennink, replaces akLaff on one CD). One of the best live recordings I have ever heard!

Patrick Sandberg comments:
Four soundtracks from one of Sweden’s absolutely strongest and memorable composers, cornetist and trumpetist Lars Färnlöf (1942-1994,) recorded 1965-1971. Featuring a who’s who of the Swedish jazz scene around the time – Monica Zetterlund, Sabu Martinez, Bernt Rosengren, Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielson and Staffan Abeleen, to name a few. Most of the music is previously unreleased. Comes with 12 page booklet including biography, rare photos and session details.

Anat Cohen And Trio Brasileiro «Rosa Dos Ventos» (Anzic Records)

Cim Meyer comments:
An almost chamber-musical approach from some excellent musicians. Title track is a clarinet-percussion duo and everything is acoustic and intimate.
